Music theory is the study of the practices and possibilities of music. While we won’t be covering all there is to know about music theory. We will try to give you enough understanding to enable you to create great prompting with Suno.AI.

A song is a piece of music intended to be sung by the human voice. It combines melody, harmony, rhythm, and often lyrics to convey emotions, tell stories, or express ideas. Songs can be accompanied by instruments or performed a cappella. Here are the key components:

• Melody: The sequence of notes that are musically satisfying and often the main part that is sung.
• Harmony: The combination of simultaneously sounded musical notes to produce chords.
• Rhythm: The timing of the notes, how they are spaced, and how they flow within the song.
• Lyrics: The words sung in the song, often telling a story or expressing emotions.
• Structure: The arrangement of different sections such as verses, choruses, bridges, and outros.

Understanding what a song is and its components allows you to create detailed prompts for Suno.AI, resulting in more precise and tailored musical outputs.

Getting Started

Creating amazing, rocking, pounding, or even comedy songs is very easy with Suno. The key is understanding how the prompting systems works, and the different options to creating, extending, and producing songs. 

You will need to sign up at www.suno.com Once on the site you can navigate the left side of the page and click “Create”. 

This is where it all happens, I’m going to break down the two options to start a song, then we will jump into formatting, and wrap up with troubleshooting. First, we need to talk about prompting. 

Prompting with Suno.AI

• Clarity and Conciseness: The key to effective prompting is to be both clear and concise. Ensure that your prompts are straightforward, with no unnecessary words. This helps the AI to better understand your intent and produce the desired output without ambiguity.
• Structure: Organize your prompt in a logical sequence. Start with the most crucial elements, such as genre or mood, and then specify additional details like instrumentation, themes, or lyrical content.
• Genre and Style Capitalization: Always capitalize genres and styles in your prompts. This helps the AI to quickly identify and categorize the type of music you're aiming for. For example, "ROCK, ALTERNATIVE, BLUES" should always be capitalized​.

Basic Creator

This is the best place to start. The site will even give you some prompts to get you going if you get stuck coming up with an idea. I’m going to discuss my tactic for song prompting, keep in mind like with any AI tool your input is guidance, and results can vary. 

I use two types of basic prompting techniques; a production-based prompt, or a story prompt. Basic prompts are limited to 200 characters and getting what you want concisely can be a challenge at times. Remember sometimes less is more. 

Examples of a Production Prompt:

• MOODY SYNTHWAVE, ambient pads, deep basslines, and minimalistic beats, exploring themes of solitude and reflection, with sparse ethereal vocals creating a dreamlike atmosphere.
• POP-PUNK, fast-paced guitar riffs, punchy drums, and catchy vocal hooks about youthful rebellion and carefree living, with an anthemic chorus that energizes the crowd.
• DARKWAVE, brooding synths, slow, haunting beats, and deep, echoing vocals, delving into themes of isolation and despair, layered with rich, atmospheric textures.

Examples of a Story Prompt:

• GOTH, SYNTHWAVE, A lone wanderer traverses a desolate, neon-lit cityscape, haunted by memories of a lost love. The protagonist encounters ghostly figures and surreal visions as they seek redemption in the endless night.
• FOLK, FANTASY, in an enchanted forest, a young bard embarks on a quest to retrieve a stolen melody that can restore peace to the land. Along the way, they encounter mystical creatures and unravel ancient secrets.
• CYBERPUNK, NOIR, A hard-boiled detective in a dystopian future hunt down a rogue AI responsible for a series of high-profile murders. As the investigation unfolds, they uncover a conspiracy that threatens to upend the entire city.
  

Note the genera and style are capitalized. The main difference is one prompt is directing the feel of the music, and one is directing the theme of the song. You can absolutely combine all this into one prompt. Just remember you have 200 input characters. Have fun with it, experiment, find what works for you. Throw in some emojis and see what happens. The Custom Prompt feature in Suno is your gateway to unleashing the full power of AI-driven music and storytelling. The gloves are off here, I'm going to show you how I set up my customer songs. I use meta tagging to set style and vibe suggestions. I’ve created a basic template that I use and build off for each song. Sometimes though I just write in teh custom window and see what happens.

Wrapping Up

Okay, before you can create this song, you need to title it and give it a style prompt. The style prompt is similar to the basic prompt only you have just 120 input characters, remaining concise is paramount on this one.

You’re ready, press create. 

The nice thing about Suno is you will get two songs for each press. Inevitably, you get that hit song you’ve been waiting for, but there might be some errors or sloppiness in the track. Not to fret—this is where the Extend option comes into play. With the Extend feature, you can take that promising tune and refine it further, adding more layers, smoothing out transitions, or simply lengthening the song to create a completer and more polished piece. It’s like giving your track a second wind, allowing you to perfect your masterpiece and bring your full creative vision to life Once you get the extension you want from the point you wanted you can join it all in Suno by clicking the options button on the extended song (three dots), and selecting “get full song”. This is also a great way to fix songs that end abruptly or run to 4:00 and cut off.
